Graduate Certificate in Human Performance Technology (HPT)

The Department of Instructional & Performance Technology (IPT) now offers a graduate program leading to a certificate in Human Performance Technology (HPT).  The graduate certificate in HPT is intended for students who want to increase their skills and credentials in HPT without completing a full master's degree at this time in their careers.  The program emphasizes the practical application of process models, tools, and techniques to workplace performance improvement situations.  The 16-credit program will be made up of four existing master's degree courses that are delivered both on-campus and online:

Simultaneous Enrollment in a Graduate Certificate and Degree Program

In accordance with the 2006-07 Graduate Catalog, page 29, new applicants are eligible to apply simultaneously for the Graduate Certificate in HPT and the M.S. in Instructional & Performance Technology (IPT).  However, acceptance into both programs is dependent on department approval. (Admission granted into both programs is the implied approval granted.) Furthermore, the courses earned toward the Graduate Certificate in HPT can be applied toward the M.S. in IPT, pending department approval. (The Chair's signature is required on the Application for Admission to Candidacy (AAC) form for the Graduate Certificate in HPT and for the M.S. in IPT and that is the implied approval granted.)

Those students who are fully-admitted IPT degree-seeking students can still apply for the Graduate Certificate in HPT, as long as they have completed only one (1) of the certificate courses (IPT529, IPT530, IPT536, or IPT560).  In accordance with the graduate catalog's "two thirds" policy, in which two thirds of the total credit for a certificate must be earned after being admitted, if more than one of the certificate courses have been completed, a student is no longer eligible to apply for the Graduate Certificate in HPT.

Admission Requirements

Admission to the Certificate program will be based on the following information:

  1. Documented evidence of an earned baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution.
  2. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 for all undergraduate credits, or a 3.0 GPA for the last 60 credits of undergraduate course work. All course work must be verified by official transcripts. If a person fails to meet the GPA requirement, that person may submit a petition to the IPT Program Committee.
  3. Appropriateness of background experience and of the fit between the prospective student's career goals and what the HPT Certificate offers.

Once the applicant's file is complete, it will be reviewed by the IPT Department Chair who will provide an admission recommendation to the Dean of the Graduate College.  The Dean will make the final admission decision and will notify the applicant.

Application Procedures

  1. Submit a completed Graduate Admission Application form and fee.
  2. Request official transcripts from all institutions attended to be submitted to Boise State University, Graduate Admission and Degree Services, Office, 141 Math/GeoSciences, 1910 University Drive, Boise, ID 83725-1110.
  3. Submit to the IPT Department Chair a one-page letter of interest briefly summarizing your background and motivation for enrolling in the certificate program.  This letter of interest should be attached to an email and sent to Linda Burnett (lburnett@boisestate.edu).
