Apply for Admission

The Instructional and Performance Technology (IPT) department offers three graduate programs:

  1. a master's degree in IPT
  2. a graduate certificate in Human Performance Technology (HPT)
  3. a graduate certificate in Workplace E-Learning and Performance Support (WELPS)

Admission requirements for all three IPT programs are:

  1. Documented evidence of an earned baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution.
  2. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 for all undergraduate credits, or a 3.0 GPA for the last 60 credits of undergraduate course work. All course work must be verified by official transcripts. If a person fails to meet the GPA requirement, that person may submit a petition to the IPT Program Committee.
  3. Appropriateness of background experience and of the fit between the prospective student's career goals and what the IPT program offers. (Applicants must submit a resume and a one-to-two page essay of intent to help determine satisfaction of this requirement.)

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

The application process  for each IPT graduate program is the same. Please note that:

  • the graduate application form can reflect an applicant's simultaneous enrollment in two graduate programs,
  • only one resume is required for an applicant's file, and
  • a separate essay of intent is required for each program's application.
Step Application Procedure Action Result Final Outcome
1 Apply to the Graduate College to be a degree- and/or certificate-seeking student.  It is on this form that you specify the degree and/or certificate you intend to seek and the semester you intend to start. U.S. applicants complete the online graduate admission application form.

International applicants complete the online International Graduate Application.
You will be assigned a:
  • student ID#
  • Boise State email account
  • registration appointment for the semester you intend to start.
The IPT office is notified of your intent to seek the degree and/or one of their certificates. In addition, you are now eligible to enroll in an IPT graduate course.
2 If you will take an IPT online course, notify the IPT Systems Administrator of your intent to take an IPT online course. Otherwise, skip this step. Submit the IPT Equipment Availability Checklist. Your computer will be reviewed for minimum requirements.  After approval, you will be sent instructions for downloading and configuring the software and for participating in the free online IPT Bootcamp. You will have the IPT classroom software on your computer and will know how to access and navigate the online classroom.
3 Request official transcripts Send a completed transcript order form to all previously attended institutions requesting official transcripts be sent to the following address:

Boise State University
Graduate Admissions and Degree Services, MG-141
1910 University Drivee
Boise, ID 83725-1110

Upon receipt of your transcripts, the Graduate College will calculate your GPA . The Graduate College will send the IPT office a Program Admission Recommendation (PAR) form requesting a recommendation on your admission.
4 Submit your resume and essay-of-intent Send the following information via email at lburnett@boisestate.edu:
  1. your resume and
  2. a one-to-two page essay-of-intent for each program, that describes your career goals and how the degree and/or certificate will help you achieve those goals.
The materials required for your application will be complete. Your application file will be reviewed and a decision on your admission will be made. The IPT office will email you in regard to the recommended admission status.  The final decision is made by the Graduate College.

Simultaneous Enrollment in a Graduate Certificate Program and a Degree Program

In accordance with Graduate College policy, new applicants are eligible to apply simultaneously to two graduate programs. Applicants cannot be simultaneously enrolled in more than two graduate programs at a time.  For example,

    • [a MS degree in IPT + a HPT certificate] or
    • [a MS degree in IPT + a WELPS certificate] or
    • [a HPT certificate + a WELPS certificate] or
    • [another BSU graduate degree + a HPT certificate] or
    • [another BSU graduate degree + a WELPS certificate],
    • but not [a MS degree in IPT + a HPT certificate + a WELPS certificate].

In addition, acceptance into both programs is dependent on department approval.  Unless otherwise noted, the credits earned toward a  graduate certificate can be applied toward the M.S. degree in IPT.

Fully-admitted IPT degree-seeking students can still apply for a graduate certificate, as long as they have completed only one of the courses required of the certificate. This policy is in accordance with the graduate catalog's "two thirds" policy, in which two-thirds of the total credit for a certificate must be earned after being admitted.  If more than one of the certificate courses have been completed, a student is no longer eligible to apply for the certificate.
